There are a number of steps you can take to stop your cat spraying in the house.
Firstly you need to be sure that the cat is actually spraying rather than just urinating in an inappropriate place, as the two problems have different solutions.

Cat spraying is when the cat mixes urine with glandular secretions called pheromones and is done to:
- mark territory – usually the result of some perceived threat.
- attract a mate.
- relieve stress.
- communicate something to another cat.
You will need to work out why the cat is spraying and then take steps to eliminate the underlying problem.
The steps you need to take are explained in Liz Barton’s book “Cat Behavior Secrets Revealed”. Liz has gained a considerable amount of practical expertise through working with a number of vets, animal adoption agencies and animal shelters and has developed a detailed understanding of cat behavior which is all contained in this book. The book is divided into sections so you can jump in and address your particular problem straight away. However, it is well worthwhile reading it all as it will greatly increase your understanding of why cats behave as they do.
As well as spraying, some of the problems covered include:
• Not using the litterbox
• Biting unexpectedly
• Scratching in inappropriate places
• Damaging houseplants
• Relations with other cats in the household
• Night time activity
• Generally misbehaving.
As well as resolving any current problems this will also help you avoid problems in the future. You will then be less stressed and will be able to enjoy your pet.
